GPIO Devices
Fixed RFID readers are usually equipped with a GPIO port, which is short for General Purpose Input/Output port. At Gateway RFID, we have a range for GPIO devices for you to choose from in order to suit your particular needs.
What is a GPIO Device
A GPIO device gives your fixed RFID reader additional functionality, such as video or audio signals. A GPIO port on a reader usually has only two settings: on or off. The signal acts as a trigger for GPO device by sending voltage through the port to trigger the device to perform a certain action.
Within each GPIO port are several pins. These pins either outputs or inputs a trigger signal. In addition, the number of pins inside a GPIO port varies reader to reader; it’s important to understand how many pins exist in a reader, since most GPIO devices require three or more pins to operate.
Uses for GPIO Devices
GPIO devices are great for including antennas or other add-ons for your RFID reader. Effectively, they give additional functionality to your reader to improve various applications. For example, you can include a motion detector hooked to an input signal to tell a RFID reader when to begin transmitting in order to read RFID tags.
GPIO devices are especially useful for anyone who uses a RFID system that would benefit from alerts or indicators.
