Thirteenth Annual RFID Annual Conference and Exhibition
The RFID Journal Live! 2015 Conference was held on April 15—17th in beautiful, sunny, fantastic San Diego (sorry, it has been a tough winter in New England…). The three day conference is one of the biggest events focusing primarily on what is RFID and how RFID works and is considered a must-attend for people interested in RFID and seeing what the latest developments and products are in the space.
The conference had a full schedule of key note speakers, preconference sessions, and conference tracks in all of the important RFID application domains, special training, post conference classes, and a special awards presentation for several categories. The exhibit hall contained more than 200 vendors showcasing their latest products.
Mark Roberti, the founder and editor of the RFID Journal, gave a nice overview on the state of RFID and RFID basics on how RFID works. This was followed by seven tracks of preconference sessions on a wide variety of RFID topics:
- Innovative Marketing with NFC and RFID
- Item-Level Retail and Apparel Workshop
- RFID for IT Professionals
- RFID for Warehouse and Inventory Management
- RFID in Energy, Mining, and Construction
- RFID Journal University
- RFID-Enabled Smart Products
I attended the RFID for IT Professionals track given by Ken Traub and found it very informative. He presented a software architecture framework for RFID applications and gave additional sessions on RFID tag standards and the ALE and LLRP protocols used in RFID.
The NFL hall of famer Marshall Faulk was one of the panel members on a presentation about the Zebra Sports Solution player tracking system that is used to monitor and compare NFL players. It uses RFID tags in the shoulder pads and these tags are read up to 15 times a second. The system was shown successfully last season on NFL Thursday Night Football.

The conference was a full three day event. It also included special training in RFID topics, several post-conference classes, and special awards presentation for several RFID categories for best new products, most innovative use of RFID, and others.
